Apple picking has become our family’s annual fall ritual. Luckily, there’s an abundance of pick-your-own farms and orchards in the Hudson Valley where we can get a bushel of fresh, crispy apples and plump pumpkins. Barton Orchards in Poughquag (southern Dutchess County) is one of our favorite places. Not only can we find more than 20 apple varieties, there’s also kid-friendly entertainment and delicious treats. It’s a cross between a day in the country and an amusement park, and my kids can’t get enough.

Sojourn

The first is a contribution to the “Community Pages” section in the April issue of Chronogram magazine. The Other Tri-State Area features the neighboring towns of Millerton and Amenia in Dutchess County.

The second is a piece describing the region’s major art museums. From Cole to Calder is featured in the spring/summer issue of Sojourn,  A Seasonal Guide to the Mid-Hudson Valley.

In that spirit, I exercised my marketing muscles and developed my own re-cap of the last twelve months. These are the major highlights of a very busy, very rewarding year for WordScapes, my four-year old home-based writing business.

This past year, I’ve developed and written:

NYNow: Eco-friendly product design is on the rise

The slogan, tagline, and ad copy for the 2010 Dutchess County Tourism campaign

NYNow, a series of e-newsletters on gift and home trends for the New York International Gift Fair

Catalog copy for Good Clean Funds, a fundraising company offering eco-friendly home goods

Press releases promoting the Westchester Triathlon, a Golf Tournament for international chefs, the opening of a “wellness” market, the introduction of the “Tailored Tee” women’s clothing line, and more.

An article on multi-generational travel for AAA Home & Away

A round-up of the largest Jack O’Lantern festivals in the U.S. for WomansDay.com

A profile of a sustainable alpaca farmer for The Valley Table magazine

Just for fun, I’ve also launched a family travel blog, “Go BIG or Go Home,” to chronicle what happens when my small-town family visits the “world’s largest”…whatever!

The sight of alpacas in Millbrook raised some eyebrows initially. “When we first moved up here, everyone was very curious about the crazy Germans raising alpacas here in horse country,” Alicia says amusedly.

Westchester Family - November 2010
