I enjoyed many years in marketing positions, promoting the benefits of various tourism destinations. I now draw upon this experience as a copywriter. Working with my client, BBG&G Advertising, we created a marketing campaign which recently won the Excellence in Tourism Marketing award from The New York State Travel & Vacation Association.

Print and online ads targeting various travel markets all reflect a unifying slogan: “Simple & Sophisticated. You Deserve Dutchess.” More of this award-winning campaign can be seen here.

Recently, I was awarded with a Gold award in the 2011 Annual NATJA (North American Travel Journalists Association) Competition in the “Intergenerational and Family Travel – Internet” category. This awards competition, now in its 20th year, honors the “best of the best” in travel writing, photography and promotion that cover all aspects of the travel industry worldwide. This year, NATJA received more than 500 submissions from all over the world.

My winning entry was for this post, the “World’s Largest Traveling Amusement Park, at the Big E”, for my Go BIG or Go Home family travel blog. It’s about the state fair of Massachusetts and several other New England states, where you’ll find the world’s largest traveling amusement park, and of course, the “Craz-E” burger!

I also earned a Bronze award in the “Historical or Hobby Travel – Internet” category for this post I wrote for Go BIG or Go Home about the St. Petersburg Shuffleboard Club. The club, an Art Deco gem which opened in 1923, is the world’s largest shuffleboard club, and the nation’s oldest.

Apple picking has become our family’s annual fall ritual. Luckily, there’s an abundance of pick-your-own farms and orchards in the Hudson Valley where we can get a bushel of fresh, crispy apples and plump pumpkins. Barton Orchards in Poughquag (southern Dutchess County) is one of our favorite places. Not only can we find more than 20 apple varieties, there’s also kid-friendly entertainment and delicious treats. It’s a cross between a day in the country and an amusement park, and my kids can’t get enough.

“School’s out for summer—which means the kids need entertaining. This year, instead of heading to the closest theme park, consider a more educational vacation. The 10 cities below boast some of the best learning experiences in the country; plus, they’re loads of fun for little ones. These facilities are more than just indoor playgrounds––they’re hands-on and high-tech, introducing concepts of math, science, literature, history and geography in such an active, engaging way that the kids will never suspect that they’re expanding their minds.”

I appreciate the “State of the Union”-type address delivered annually by our political leaders. For the most part, they are concise summations of the past year’s achievements — thanks to talented speech writers!

In that spirit, I exercised my marketing muscles and developed my own re-cap of the last twelve months. These are the major highlights of a very busy, very rewarding year for WordScapes, my four-year old home-based writing business.

This past year, I’ve developed and written:

NYNow: Eco-friendly product design is on the rise

The slogan, tagline, and ad copy for the 2010 Dutchess County Tourism campaign

NYNow, a series of e-newsletters on gift and home trends for the New York International Gift Fair

Catalog copy for Good Clean Funds, a fundraising company offering eco-friendly home goods

Press releases promoting the Westchester Triathlon, a Golf Tournament for international chefs, the opening of a “wellness” market, the introduction of the “Tailored Tee” women’s clothing line, and more.

And on the “editorial” side:

An article on multi-generational travel for AAA Home & Away

A round-up of the largest Jack O’Lantern festivals in the U.S. for WomansDay.com

A profile of a sustainable alpaca farmer for The Valley Table magazine

Just for fun, I’ve also launched a family travel blog, “Go BIG or Go Home,” to chronicle what happens when my small-town family visits the “world’s largest”…whatever!

Are there any projects we can work on together this year? Feel free to contact me!
